MAKING SOME SACRIFICE

Prophet T.B. Joshua

“God deserves our best because He gives us His best. Therefore, what we cherish most becomes our best offering in terms of time, effort, strength, knowledge, money, love and every good thing the Lord has given us. Abraham gave his best and God continued the supplies. The widow gave her best and God continued the supplies. Making sacrifice means considering God first, from whom all you have comes, before self because whatsoever you do to the least of your fellow brothers, that you do unto God (Matthew 25:40).

“Our union with Christ is the basis for our unity with one another. Do to others as you would want them to do unto you. What are you doing to others? Remember, what you are doing to others, that you are doing unto God.

“The poor widow said in 1 Kings 17:12, ‘I swear in the name of God that I have nothing but the little for my son and me’. She really had lost all hope of further provision. But Elijah said to her, ‘You can still spare out of it for me’ (1 Kings 17:13). This means, nothing is too small to share with others. This means, every man has something, big or small, to plant.

“When we plant, we reap more of whatever we plant. It can be in the form of love, favour, money or any material thing you need to live for God. The poor widow planted something her life depended on, something she cherished. It took her boldness to step out and take God at His Word. I mean, it took her faith to meet such a situation. You who say you do not have enough to spare, remember the poor widow. You don’t receive because you don’t give. When you give, you don’t receive because you give wrongly (James 4:2-3). How do we give wrongly? We give wrongly when we give unworthily, when we give only to be seen by men.

“If you give to people because you expect them to give you in return, you give wrongly. When I give out worn-out shoes, that is not sacrifice. When I give out what I do not need, that is not sacrifice. When I go to a place at a time I really do not have any serious business to attend to, that is not a sacrifice. When you have a serious personal matter to attend to and you leave that aside to attend to your friend’s matter, that is a sacrifice.

“As people sit down in the church today, to many, they are sacrificing their time. But I tell you the truth, if someone had received a phone call this morning inviting them to come and collect a cheque for the contract they had earlier executed, such a person would give priority to that rather than going to the church. Many go to church because they really don’t have any serious personal matter to attend to.

“People of the world believe that there is more gain in receiving than in giving because they want clear gain – clear gain in terms of naira, dollars, pounds. For example, if you are telling people of the world that coming to church would bring the peace of the Lord, once that peace, to them, cannot be quantified in terms of naira, dollars, pounds, it means nothing to them.

“Let us not forget that Jesus knows our heart and the motive behind our giving. He knows when you give for God’s sake. He knows when you give only to be seen by men.”
